AAM’s Pay It Forward Project, Inspired by Marg Helgenberger, in Honor of Her 60th Birthday

Every year we like to team up with our fellow fans to do something special in honor of Marg’s birthday. In the past we have created videos, designed books filled with fan letters, created musical playlists inspired by her, and for the past couple of years, we have done a fundraiser for Stand Up To Cancer, a charity that Marg actively supports. The idea behind each of our activities has been to come together, share our love for Marg, and, most importantly, to thank her for being such an inspiration to us all.

While keeping with the same basic theme of showing Marg how much she inspires us, this year I decided to let those who wanted to participate choose their own way of showing how Marg inspires them. My only criteria was that they take that inspiration that they get from Marg and pay it forward — channel it into doing at least one deed or act of kindness, no matter how big or how small, that sends some good vibes out into the world to offset some of the negativity that seems to constantly surround us these days. I also wanted fans to choose something that was important to them and encouraged them to look around their own communities for ways they could help.

I got a late start on planning this year’s activity because of some family issues I was dealing with and was a little worried that no one would participate, but as always, Marg’s fans came through like the rock stars they all are. (You guys are the best!)

So, without further ado, I’d love to share the good deeds that Marg has inspired her fans to go out and do in honor of her birthday.

The Pay It Forward Project: “No Act of Kindness, No Matter How Small, is Ever Wasted.”

Jeyce P. from Brasil decided that she wanted to focus on doing what she could to support children who are fighting cancer in her country so she chose to make a donation to NACC (nucleo de apoio a criança com cancer). NACC offers support to needy children who are being treated for cancer and their families. Some of the services they offer include the following: transportation assistance, food support programs, dental care, physical therapy, psychosocial support, and more.

Kris S. from North Carolina chose to participate in the ADOPT-A-NATIVE ELDER program. This non-profit program provides food, simple medicines, clothing, fabric, yarns, and more to help traditional Elders who desire to remain on their Lands and in their traditional lifestyle. Most of these Elders, who range in age from 75-100, live in remote portions of the Navajo reservation, with many living in traditional Navajo housing with no running water and some have no electricity. As they get older, it becomes more difficult for the Elders to support themselves in the traditional way of life and this is where Adopt-A-Native tries to help.

FANS RAISE OVER $500 FOR SU2C IN HONOR OF MARG’S BIRTHDAY

Over the years, we’ve sent Marg many tokens of affection on her birthday to let her know much we adore her and how much she inspires us, and in doing so, we’ve often focused on her onscreen work.  This year I decided to try something different – something that would celebrate her offscreen work, something that would allow us to come together and show Marg how much she inspires us all to be better people. I decided to go with a Stand Up to Cancer fundraiser because as most of Marg’s fans know, the fight against cancer is very important to Marg for personal reasons, so much so that she has devoted much of her life to raising awareness, including serving as an ambassador for Stand Up to Cancer. Finding a cure for cancer is important to her fans as well since so many of us have either lost loved ones to cancer or even have loved ones who are currently battling the disease.

To Marg, I hope you have a birthday that is as amazing as you are!  Whether it’s your dedication to causes like Stand Up to Cancer or your passion when it comes to standing up for what you believe in (as with our recent election), you’re an inspiration and a role model for so many fans, both young and old and we love you for it.  I hope this fundraiser will serve as a symbol of just how much you inspire your fans.

I also want to say a huge thanks to all of the fans listed below who donated.  It’s always such a thrill to see fans from all around the globe coming together to show their love for Marg.  I also know that money is an issue for many of us, so it really did mean the world to see people donating whatever amount they could because they felt the cause to be worthy and because they’re so inspired by Marg.  I had set a goal of $500 and am thrilled to say that we not only met that goal, but we surpassed it.  As of my writing this post, we have raised $550 for SU2C. Yay for Marg fans! In speaking to folks at SU2C, I’ve also been told that this fundraiser can be open-ended, which means that if you weren’t able to meet our deadline for Marg’s birthday, you can still donate at anytime.  I’ll happily leave the link up on AAM’s front page and will send out updates if we receive additional donations.  Thanks again everyone!

FANS AROUND THE WORLD CELEBRATE MARG’S 54TH BIRTHDAY

Thanks so much to all of the fans who chose to participate in our birthday video to celebrate Marg and her special day. This year I’m pleased to report that we had 33 participants representing 13 different countries. All of your words were beautiful, so I really hope that Marg will see this video, if not today, then some day. I think that she would enjoy hearing how much you all love and respect her and all that she stands for. A special thanks to Stèphanie from Marg Helgenberger Brasil and to Sharon, my second-in-command here, for all of their help in making this video happen. Also, a huge thanks to AndryPresh for making the graphics that were used in the video.

Marg, if you read this, I hope that you have a wonderful birthday and that this video makes your day even more special. Your fans truly adore you and I hope this video shows that.

I have also posted a backup link for the video on Vimeo in case YouTube doesn’t play nice today: Vimeo Link
