MARG HELGENBERGER SERVES AS EMISSARY FOR CANCER CENTER
The Nebraska Medical Center: The Gift
Spring 2007
Nebraska native and ‘CSI’ Star Marg Helgenberger has teamed up with The Nebraska Medical Center to promote prevention and a greater awareness of cancer. As The Nebraska Medical Center’s celebrity emissary for cancer, Marg appears with her mother in television public service announcements in which she urges everyone to get regular checks and preventive care such as mammograms and prostate checks.
While growing up in North Bend, Neb., her mother, Kay Snyder, was the center of Marg’s world. Then one day, about 25 years ago, Kay discovered a lump in her breast while doing a self-breast exam. Her family was devastated. However, because of Kay’s persistence and regular follow-ups with her doctor, her cancer was diagnosed and treated successfully. Since then, Marg has become an avid advocate for cancer awareness and prevention.
Marg’s world may be a little bigger now, but fortunately for her, her mother is still a big part of her life because her cancer was detected early. “As a long-term cancer survivor, this is our way to give others hope and to spread the word about the importance of early detection,” says Kay. “With the right medical care, people are surviving cancer longer.”
Marg was also a special guest at The Nebraska Medical Center’s annual Star of Courage event May 2, that recognized individuals who have shown great courage and resolve in their struggle against cancer.
