I have to say that being the webmistress of a celebrity fansite is not something that I ever envisioned myself doing. Even when I was a teenager, I had little or no interest in celebrities and was certainly never inspired by any of them. Sure, they kept me entertained when I watched television or went to the movies and I certainly thought a few of them were hot, but that was as deep as my interest ran.
But then in 1988, along came ‘China Beach’ and along with it came Marg Helgenberger. From the pilot episode, I was hooked on this Vietnam War-based show with its incredible cast of strong female characters and I was especially captivated by Marg’s character, K.C. Koloski from the first moment I saw her onscreen. The funniest part about that is that she didn’t even have any lines in that first scene; she was just lounging in a doorway. Something about her very presence though just grabbed hold and wouldn’t let go. Even though Dana Delany was technically the star of the show, ‘China Beach’ was all about Marg and K.C. for me. And as fascinated as I was by the character of K.C., with each passing week, I also found myself wanting to know more and more about the person behind the role.
The more I learned about Marg, the more I liked and respected her – and not just as an actress but as a person. I come from a very small rural town and finding out that Marg was from a similar background struck a chord with me. She just came across as so normal, so modest, so ‘not’ Hollywood – a shy, sweet, small-town girl who just happened to have a job that put her on television in front of millions of viewers each week. I have watched her career for the last 26 years and counting now, and my admiration and respect for her has continued to grow. She is intelligent, political, outspoken, and charitable. She is completely devoted to her family and never seems to forget where she comes from no matter how much her career skyrockets. She has managed to stay very grounded even while starring on the number one show in the show. She is also a well-rounded individual with many interests outside of acting — music, reading, golf, and yoga, just to name a few.
I definitely view her as a role model, both for myself and for other women of all ages, and that is why I wanted to be a part of this site that pays tribute to her and allows fans to see her as more than just a talented actress.
So here I am, the webmistress of a celebrity fansite.
